Procedure for coding electric park and handbrake control unit -J540:

Control unit coding

The encoding code comprises three different variants (engine, gearbox, country).

Define the encoding code based on the following tables.

Coding table

1st digit - Engine:

3.0 MPI                                                1

3.0 TDI                                                2

3.2 FSI                                                12

3.7 MPI                                               3

4.0 TDI                                                4

4.2 FSI                                                9

4.2 MPI                                                5

4.2 TDI                                                10

6.0 MPI                                                6

5.2 FSI                                                7

2nd digit - Gearbox:

Multitronic direct-shift transmission, 01J               1

Automatic              AL420, 09L                           2

Automatic               AL600, 09E                           3

3rd digit - Country:

Rest of the World (ROW)                      1

USA/Canada                                        2

Japan                                                  3

For example, the code for an Audi A8, 3.0 TDI with Multitronic VL30 for USA/Canada is: 212

Basic setting

A basic setting of the electric park and handbrake control unit must be performed prior to coding the control unit. At the start of basic setting the fault memory is erased. A readiness bit is set. Then the tilt angle sensor is calibrated and a second readiness bit is set. Without these readiness bits no coding is possible.

Procedure for replacing electric park and handbrake control unit -J540:

After installing a new electric park and handbrake control unit -J540, the control unit must be recoded. Removing and installing control unit -J540 A Rep.Gr.47

Control unit coding

Coding table

1. digit, Engine:

3,0l MPI                                               1

3,0l TDI                                               2

3,7l                                                      3

4,0l                                                     4

4,2l                                                      5

6,0l                                                     6

2. digit, Gearbox:

Multitronic VL30                                   1

Automatic              AL420                                   2

Automatic               AL600                                   3

3. digit, Country:

Rest of the World (RoW)                      1

USA/Canada                                        2

Japan                                                  3

For example, the code for an Audi A8, 3.0l TDI with Multitronic VL30 for USA/Canada is: 212

Basic setting

A basic setting of the electric park and handbrake control unit must be performed after replacing the control unit. At the start of basic setting the fault memory is erased. A readiness bit is set. Reading measured value block

The following measured values are displayed:

Measured value block 001:

J System configuration

J Repair mode (status display)

J Maximum ECD deceleration (m/sІ)

J Current pad thickness (mm)

Measured value block 002:

JBattery voltage (V)

JSwitch setting (possible readout: Unpressed, Open, Close, Error)

JCurrent tilt angle

J Calculated brake temperature (from software release 0200)

J Correction value, tilt angle (to software release 0190)

Measured value block 003, brake status:

JAttained tension force, left

JAttained tension force, right

JBrake status left

JBrake status right

Measured value block 007:

JText display (LR)

J Operation counter (The readout must be multiplied by 2, as the second time the parking brake is opened and closed the counter is increased by 1.)

Measured value block 099:

J Control unit software and hardware status

Measured value block 125:

JCAN message from brake control unit

JCAN message from airbag control unit

JCAN message from gearbox control unit

JCAN message from engine control unit

 Possible readouts: 1 or 0; if "1" OK; if "0" n.OK

If a 1 is displayed, a CAN message is sent from the relevant control unit.

If the tester shows a 0, the CAN message is interrupted.

In such cases read the fault memory of the relevant control unit.

Measured value block 126:

JCAN message from Gateway

JCAN message from dash panel insert

JCAN message elec. ignition lock
