Audi OEM TV

Overview

There are 2 types of OEM TV available Analogue or Hybrid, actually there was a third which was a digital only addition to the analogue system which is very rare to ind these days.

EU vs US Systems

The Hybrid unit comes in EU format which covers the UK and Europe and the Japanese version, US Spec cars did not come with ant TV, leaving the US to its own devices, there is basically 2 options for the US,

This document deals with the OEM systems, i will add an aftermarket systems page shortly (Check here)

Where to buy

Of course you can buy these from Audi or Kufatec, brand new these go for 1300GBP, or you can go the second hand route, ebay, breakers etc.

The breakers (such as Prestige Motors/A8parts) is a good option as the unit would be known working when taken from the donor.

Other issues

The OEM TV's have 4 diversity powered antenna sockets, when buying a secondhand unit you wont know how many of these are fully operational until fitting is complete.

make sure of the part number you are buying, all of the TV units physically look exactly the same, only the part numbers will tell you if its digital/analogue/MMI2G/MMI3G/Japaneese market only etc

Digital or analogue

I presume that these days it would be fairly foolish to fit an analogue unit unless replacing an existing one or to get the aux sockets, If you dont have the analogue TV already fitted you will need a lot of extras to go with the TV module.

Where is it located

The TV Tuner is located on the media rack in the luggage compartment, left side, normally below the Navigation DVD unit at the back.

Do you need the aux in sockets

If you want to use an external DVD/Playstation/media player you will need to install these cables as well, its easier to install it/them from the start than to do it later.

There are 3 Aux sockets on the hybrid tv unit, AUX 1, AUX 2, AUX OUT, The AUX out will display whatever is selected in the MMi though not the MMI screen itself (The analogue unit does not have the Out Sockets)

see this link for fitting these cables

Installation

This installation requires some general knowledge of what you are doing and involves processes that may damage your car if done incorrectly

Installation in a car with an existing analogue tuner

This is relativly simple, just swap out the analogue unit for the new hybrid, all the connections are the same.

You will need to remove the media rack in the luggage compartment to get access to do this. be carefull with the myriad of cables running behind here and ensure you reconnect any that you need to unattach. do not detach the navigation cables.

Installation in a car without and existing tuner
