Components required

All the components required are available in the coolbox installation kit -4E0 088 400 B

(4E0088400B)

 

Procedure
Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
Use screwdriver to prise off dash panel end trim (left-side) -arrow-.

Carefully detach trim panel from dash panel using removal wedge -3409--arrows-.
Open coin holder.

Slide trim for coin holder to left out of fastener -arrow- and detach.
Open glove box.
 
Starting from above glove box, carefully separate trim panel with switch panel from dash panel using removal wedge -3409-.
Note
Take particular care when unfastening clip at end of trim panel closest to driver.
Unplug electrical connector.

Unscrew driver's storage compartment -arrows-.
Unplug electrical connectors.

Detach trim for A-pillar (bottom) -arrows-.

Vehicles with fixed backrest:
Remove rear seat bench
Remove rear seat backrest
Vehicles with individual rear seats:
Move the seat and backrest as far forwards as possible.
All:
Detach trim for C-pillar (bottom) -arrows-.

Unscrew bolts -1- and -2-.
Detach trim for B-pillar (bottom) from trim for B-pillar (top) -arrows A-.
Pull trim for B-pillar (bottom) upwards out of fresh-air duct -arrow B-.

Open centre armrest (rear).
Open load-through hatch (for ski bag).
Reach behind top of retaining frame -1- and release the retaining clips -arrows- on side of ski bag, starting at top.
Remove retaining frame from between the backrests.

Release retaining clips -arrows- and press ski bag out of retaining frame towards luggage compartment.

Remove retaining clips from luggage compartment floor covering.
Take luggage compartment floor covering out of luggage compartment.
Pull pins -1 ... 3- out of fasteners.
Lift off rear cross panel trim -arrows-.

Fold up fastening ring -1-.
Unscrew bolts -arrows- and detach mounting bracket for fastening ring -2-.

Detach retaining clips on luggage compartment side trim -2- from body -arrows-.
Unplug electrical connector at 12 V socket -1-.
Take luggage compartment side trim out of luggage compartment.
WARNING
On vehicles fitted with a telematics system, activate the telematics control unit service mode in “Guided Fault Finding” before disconnecting the battery .
Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.

Remove cover of luggage compartment side trim (right-side) -arrows-.

Remove cover -1- over battery.
Note
Ignore -item 2-.

Disconnect earth wire -arrow- at battery.

Guide electrical wiring -5- leading to coolbox through cable duct -1- towards rear into luggage compartment.
Fold up insulating mat -2- and remove bolt -3- at earth point.
Position earth wire -4- of wiring harness for coolbox at earth point in addition to earth wires already attached there. Then tighten bolt.
Secure electrical wire at the point marked with an -arrow- using a cable tie from the repair kit.

Guide electrical wire -1- at rear sill towards the front through cable duct -2-.

Guide electrical wire -1- at front sill towards the front through cable duct -2-.

Release retainers -arrows- on cable duct at A-pillar and guide electrical wire upwards underneath the dash panel.
Then close the cable duct again, making sure you hear the retainers engage.
Release retaining clip -arrow- and detach air duct -1-.

Disconnect terminal 75 voltage supply relay 1 -J680- from position 6 on relay and fuse holder behind dash panel (left-side).

Release retaining clips -arrows- and unclip relay socket.

Use a small screwdriver to carefully release the retainers -arrow A- and push the lower section of the relay socket off the upper section -arrow B-.
Open up the wrapping on the vehicle wiring harness leading to the relay socket along a length of approx. 100 mm.
Caution
Make sure the insulation of the electrical wiring is not damaged.

Use removing tool -VAS 1978/4A- to release connector in position 2 on upper section of relay socket.
Pull connector out of relay socket.

Installing
Use wire stripper -VAS 1978/3- to disconnect the unplugged connector from the vehicle wiring harness (distance to connector: dimension -a-).
l Dimension -a- = 90 mm

Use wire stripper -VAS 1978/3- to strip 6 ... 7 mm of insulation off the free end of the vehicle wiring harness.

Slide a “yellow” crimp connector -2- from wiring harness repair set -VAS 1978- onto free ends of vehicle wiring harness -1- and Y wire -3- for coolbox.

Use crimping pliers -VAS 1978/1- to crimp the crimp connector with the “yellow” crimp recesses on both sides.
Note
  Make sure that the insert for crimping pliers -VAS 1978/2- has been inserted in the crimping pliers.
  Take care not to crimp insulation of wire ends.
N97-0015
After crimping you must use hot-air blower -VAS 1978/14- and shrink element -VAS 1978/15- to shrink the crimp connector.
  Crimp connector must be heated working outwards from the centre, until it is completely sealed and adhesive begins to emerge.
  Set hot-air blower to appropriate temperature as specified in operating instructions.
  When shrinking, make sure you do not damage any other wires, plastic parts or insulating material with the hot nozzle.

Plug wide connector -1- of Y wire into lower section of relay socket -2-. You should hear it click into place.
Check that it is correctly engaged by pulling lightly on the electrical wire.
Connect the lower and upper sections of the relay socket -3-, making sure that they click into place.
Check that the two parts of the relay socket are correctly engaged.
Note
Wrap the felt strip from the repair set around the vehicle wiring harness in the area of the crimp connector and the splice point on the Y wire.

Clip relay socket into position 6 of relay and fuse holder behind dash panel (left-side).
Fit terminal 75 voltage supply relay 1 -J680- onto relay socket.

Unscrew bolts -1- on fuse holder -2-.
Release retaining tabs -arrows- and detach fuse holder from central tube for dash panel.

Cut open cable tie -1-.
Release cover for fuse holder -arrows-.

Release retaining strip for electrical connectors in direction of the -arrow-
Connect the free connector tabs of the vehicle wiring harness and the wiring harness for coolbox to the fuse holder as follows:
  Position 37, contact -1-: wiring harness for coolbox
  Position 37, contact -2-: Y wire for coolbox
Lock retaining strip for electrical connectors in place.

Attach fuse holder to central tube for dash panel.
Fit a 10 A fuse in position 37.

Secure the electrical wires -2- you routed earlier to the wiring harness leading to the fuse holder using a cable tie -1- from the repair kit.
Caution
  Make sure the wires for the coolbox are routed carefully, to avoid chafing and rattling.
  Use the remaining cable ties to route the wires correctly.
Install trim for B-pillar (bottom)
Install trim for A-pillar (bottom)
Install trim for C-pillar (bottom)

Route wiring -1- for coolbox underneath trim for back panel of luggage compartment as shown in illustration.
Install luggage compartment side trim
Install rear cross panel trim
Install luggage compartment floor covering .

Align coolbox in its installation position.
Open coolbox.
Insert clamps -1- with bolts -2- screwed in into guide on coolbox.
Slide clamps downwards slightly.
Pull coolbox towards rear seat backrest and slide clamps downwards as far as possible.
Tighten bolts.

Install trim frame for coolbox, pressing it on carefully -arrows-.

Attach electrical connector -arrow- between wiring harness and coolbox.
Push electrical connector underneath the luggage compartment floor covering.
Carry out measures to be taken after connecting the battery
